What Is Reiki and How Does It Work?

Reiki is more than a relaxation technique — it's a healing energy that results in emotional balance, self-awareness, and physical well-being. By supporting the body's natural ability to release dis-ease, Reiki creates a nurturing space where healing can unfold on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels.

What we call Reiki is actually a means of using the Universal Life Force Energy (ULFE) that flows through each of us. We call it Reiki because of the work of Japanese Reiki master Mikao Usui, who gave the name to his new way of working with ULFE in the late 1920s. The most familiar method is a practitioner placing hands on, or near, the body — but this is far from the only way.

It's a common misperception that special training and attunement is required to access ULFE. Think back to the last time you had a headache, stomachache, or scraped knee. What was your first instinct? You placed your hands on the area and the contact brought some relief. That is using ULFE — an ability inherent to every human being, most of whom have no awareness of the power they already carry.

"No Reiki practitioner — nor any doctor — has ever actually healed a single patient. The body heals itself. We simply supply more energy to support the process."

Western medicine has taken notice. Reiki is used as an adjunct therapy in hospitals around the world, and scientific research continues to grow. A 2024 double-blind study published in Seminars in Oncology Nursing recorded measurable positive effects of Reiki on cancer patients — reducing pain, anxiety, and stress levels.

The Two Ways of Experiencing Reiki

1. Through a Practitioner

There are millions of gifted Reiki practitioners worldwide doing profound healing work. A typical session lasts about an hour, and the reasons people seek one out vary widely:

  • Chronic pain and physical healing. Most chronic aches and illnesses are unresolved trauma energies stored in the body. Regular Reiki treatment can release those toxic energies, reduce stress, improve energy flow, and accelerate recovery from injuries or surgeries.
  • Emotional healing and trauma release. Held grief, anxiety, guilt, shame, and past traumas are a heavy burden. Reiki provides a non-invasive space for the body to process and release stuck emotional blocks — allowing people to move forward with greater mental clarity.
  • Spiritual growth and self-awareness. Reiki quiets the mind, making it easier to connect with your higher self and inherent wisdom. Many seek it when at a crossroads, searching for a deeper sense of purpose, or wanting to feel more connected to themselves.

During a session you remain fully clothed (unless having a massage). After a brief consultation, you lie down or remain seated while the practitioner places hands on or near different areas of your body for several minutes each, channeling ULFE through their palms.

Sensations vary — deep relaxation, warmth, tingling, pressure, or an unexpected emotional release are all common. Those living with CPTSD may not feel the calming effects immediately. For faster results, multiple sessions per week are recommended rather than just one.

2. Self-Healing

My Level 1 Reiki teacher once described attuning children on the autism spectrum to heal themselves through daily cranial hand placements. Before that, I never imagined Reiki could be used on oneself — and I suspect this is news to many reading this.

When one studies Level 1 Usui Reiki, students spend the following month healing themselves. But choosing to practice self-Reiki outside a formal class is a radical act of self-love. In a world full of limiting beliefs about medicine and health, taking any step toward overseeing your own healing is genuinely empowering.

The prospect can feel daunting. Many people carry unconscious beliefs that they lack the capacity to heal themselves. Some struggle with Learned Helplessness; others raised in narcissistic households must work harder to break free of programmed unworthiness. That is precisely why making it happen — proving to yourself that you can — matters so much.

Self-healing is not a substitute for professional medical care. Annual physicals, blood work, and professional treatment for chronic conditions remain important. Reiki and conventional medicine work best together.

What Does Reiki Help With?

Trauma Recovery

Trauma leaves lasting imprints on both the mind and the body — keeping us in patterns of stress, fear, and emotional overwhelm. Reiki offers a non-invasive practice that allows the nervous system to shift away from a constant survival state. While not a replacement for trauma-informed therapy, many find it a valuable complement that helps them feel calmer, more grounded, and better able to process life's challenges.

Connecting with Yourself

Reiki encourages stillness, mindfulness, and self-reflection — creating space to reconnect with who you truly are beneath your survival personality. As the mind quiets and the body relaxes, deeper gratitude, intuition, and clarity about what you need to thrive can emerge.

Reconnecting to Self-Love

Self-love begins with treating yourself with the same compassion you readily offer others. Reiki supports this journey through moments of rest, acceptance, and gentle self-care. Over time, many people develop greater patience with themselves, healthier boundaries, and a stronger sense of self-worth — approaching life from inner balance rather than self-criticism.

Nervous System Regulation

One of Reiki's most widely reported benefits is deep relaxation. As the body settles, the nervous system can shift from fight-or-flight toward a restorative response — reducing stress, easing muscle tension, and improving sleep. It's a powerful practice for coping with the emotional demands of modern life.

Personal Transformation

Healing is about more than feeling better — it's about becoming more fully yourself: the authentic you buried under layers of survival personality behaviors and beliefs. As old patterns release and new possibilities emerge, many people experience a stronger connection to their life purpose.

Getting Started: The Attunement Meditation

Formal attunement classes costing hundreds of dollars make sense for those pursuing a practitioner path. For everyone else, this simple meditation is all the attunement you need to begin healing yourself and your family.

1

Find a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be disturbed. Close your eyes and take five deep breaths, holding each for several seconds before releasing with a long, audible sigh.

2

Visualize, imagine, or simply pretend there is a bright white light in the sky beaming down through the crown of your head. This is Universal Life Force Energy — the most beautiful light you've ever seen.

3

Feel the light fill you from head to toe — every crevice of your skull, then down through your neck, shoulders, arms, and fingers. Through your torso and every vital organ. Down through your pelvis, thighs, calves, ankles, feet, and toes.

4

Take a moment to feel the energy circulating through your entire body.

You are now attuned to Reiki.

Using the Energy

You don't need to repeat the full meditation before every session. Instead, simply visualize that point of light sending white light down through your crown — it will reignite the attunement. Then say, out loud or silently, three times:

"The Reiki flows from above, through my heart, and out my hands."

You are now ready.

Sit or lie down somewhere quiet and comfortable. Begin by placing your hands on the back of your head — you can interlace your fingers. Continually visualize the energy coming from above through your hands. Notice what's happening in your body and breathe slowly into any area of discomfort.

After five minutes, move your hands to another area and repeat. Focus especially on known trauma centers: the lower back, liver, and knees. Aim for a 15–30 minute session, and practice at least once daily — more frequently for faster results.

After a month of daily self-healing, you'll be ready to offer Reiki to willing family members and friends.
